I had visions of a romantic winter train ride to New England with my beloved, but that turned out to be more time-consuming than we could manage in a long weekend. Larry said, “Just fly to Portland, and there’s a bus to Bridgton that’s easy to access from the airport. We’ll meet you in town.” And it was decided.

Jesse seemed so casual about our trip. I was developing my usual travel nerves as we packed and checked my list and double-checked all the details. Eventually, of course, we got ourselves out of the apartment and into a waiting Uber bound for LaGuardia airport. Jesse mostly smiled. But then that’s his nature.

I’ve never quite understood how Jesse turns turbulence into calm. A rare gift, that. It’s not that I’m a drama queen, exactly. Most of the time—especially at work—I’m sensible and solid. But I’ll confess to occasional flights of fantasy and near-panic that are not particularly well grounded in reality.

Harvey was the first man who understood me—when we were in our mid-twenties. He always knew what to say and what to do to bring me back to Earth after a mini episode of panic. Had I been smarter about the whole thing, Harvey and I might still be together. But there’s no point in going there! Everything unfolded as it should have. As it always does.

“Welcome to Maine,” Larry said as he greeted us at the bus stop in the middle of Bridgton. It was a beautiful day—cold and clear as a bell. Peter stowed our stuff in the rear of the SUV, and Jesse and I piled into the back seat. The trip up the mountain from town was only about fifteen minutes. Jesse smiled the whole way, as usual. I tried to relax.

When we arrived, Peter and Jesse went to greet the dog and to put away some groceries the guys had bought at the store in town. As we were heading into the cabin, Larry said, “My favorite aunt and uncle bought this place in the sixties. They didn’t have any children, so they wanted me to have it. And when they met Peter, they decided the time had come to pass the torch. Aunt Elly and Uncle Steve live in a sort of retirement community near Portland that will become assisted living for them when they need it. When we first took over the cabin, they used to come here for a few weeks in the summer and a week or so during ski season. But it’s really all ours now.”

“It’s so comfortable and inviting, Larry,” I said. Larry acknowledged my compliment with a smile, but he seemed less than convinced.

“I don’t know, David. I love this house, but it’s so far from New York. If Peter didn’t look forward to coming here, and if I didn’t love my aunt and uncle so much, I’d be tempted to sell it and move on. But that’s a decision for another day. Let me show you your room. The bed came with the house.
